NCJW Miami has launched its new community service project, "We've Got You Covered".

This is a monthly event, and the next gathering will take place on Friday, April 27.

In partnership with Mt. Sinai Cancer Treatment Center, NCJW Miami is creating blankets for their patients each month - providing personal cozy fleece blankets for cancer patients undergoing infusion treatments.

Join us for a morning of camaraderie while helping to make someone's life a little more comfortable. Spend two hours with us so we can wrap people in care and comfort.

Studies have shown that 1 in 40 Ashkenazi Jews (men and women) have a BRCA mutation--and most are unaware! Compare that to the general population incidence, where BRCA mutations occur in 1/300-1/800 people. Woman who carry a BRCA mutation have up to a 90% lifetime risk of breast can- cer and up to a 50% risk of ovarian cancer. Men also have just as much of a chance of having this mutation, and run a higher risk of prostate and male breast cancers. If we can identify who carries these genetic mutations before they develop cancer, we can prevent cancer.

Speakers: Dr. Liz Etkin-Kramer, Ob/gyn in practice on Miami Beach for 25 years. Dr. Etkin-Kramer is the founder of Yodeah, a nonprofit organization committed to educating about hereditary cancer in the Jewish Community and facilitating cost-effective genetic testing. Knowledge is power and Knowledge saves lives.

Briana Schwarz, is Sharsheret’s Florida Regional Director. Sharsheret is a national not-for-profit or- ganization supporting Jewish women and families facing breast cancer.

Genetic Testing: Color Genomics will provide a lab representative and a genetic counselor to administer saliva testing. The testing is very cost effective; for BRCA genes it is $99, and for a multigene panel of 30 different hereditary cancer genes it is $150. The testing results are emailed to you within 4 weeks and you have the additional option of reviewing the results with a genetic counselor on the phone. This consult is included in the lab cost.

Join Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus in Commemorating Yom Ha Shoah

Bet Shira Congregation in southwest Miami-Dada County at 7500 S.W. 120th Street, Pinecrest, recognizes the great importance of community involvement and providing educational opportunities in Learning. Bet Shira has established an Annual Memorial Lecture Series in honor of the Late Rabbi David H. Auerbach, who was the Founding Rabbi Emeritus of Bet Shira Congregation.

The lecture this year will be presented this Sunday, March 25, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. in the Synagogue by guest speaker, Rabbi Mitch Chefitz on the topic: Abraham, Jochanan ben Zakkai, and Us: Three Pivotal Moments in Jewish History. Speaker Mitchell Chefitz is the author of The Seventh Telling, a best-selling novel, and The Curse of Blessings, a widely translated collection of stories.

Recently his narrative poetry framed the performance of The Jewish Bride at the Arsht Center. Known nationally as an author, locally Mitch Chefitz is also known as a Rabbi, first at Temple Beth Am, then with the Havurah of South Florida, and lastly at Temple Israel of Greater Miami. He has been president of the Rabbinical Association of Greater Miami, and also chairperson of the National Havurah Committee. Rabbi Chefitz is a graduate of Berkeley and also stood bridge watches as a Navy Lieutenant on a destroyer in the Gulf of Tonkin. Now, most Sunday mornings he spends time at the Pinecrest Market.
