Afternoon Tea with a Twist featuring Issac Mizrahi

Isaac Mizrahi is a pop culture icon unlike any fashion designer of recent memory, a cabaret singer and a talk show host on QVC. He offers a candid look back on his life so far – growing up gay in a sheltered Syrian Jewish Orthodox family. His memoir is filled with poignant stories from his teenage years at the famed LaGuardia High School for Performing Arts, to a budding fashion designer working with such luminaries as Perry Ellis and Calvin Klein, to branching out on his own and being anointed the wunderkind of the international fashion world. His talents drew him into the who’s who of celebrity circles with Richard Avedon, Audrey Hepburn, Anna Wintour, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, to name only a few. This is pure Isaac Mizrahi, as only he can tell it.

Holocaust Impact Theater presents "Glimpse"

The Holocaust Impact Theater (HIT), now in its fifteenth year, is a unique theater project that engages local high school students to write, produce, direct and perform their original script. This year's production of "Glimpse" will be performed on March 14, 15 & 16 at 7pm at the Alper JCC's Robert Russell Theater. The students address timely, relevant social injustices and intolerance, while reflecting on the dangers of hate in society through The Holocaust. "Glimpse" will examine racial discrimination, drug abuse, sex trafficking, the trials and tribulations of foster care, and eating disorders with a strong Holocaust thread that weaves throughout the production.

Scheck Hillel student advances to State Science Fair

Andres Ruah

Scheck Hillel Community School Grade 8 student Andres Ruah has advanced to the 64th State Science & Engineering Fair of Florida STEM Competition with a project about energy efficiency. He is one of only 10 middle school students from the South Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair who advanced to the State competition, which will be held March 26-28 in Lakeland, Florida.

For his project, Andres built a concrete block made of cement and recycled plastic to create a more energy-efficient method of ventilation.

“My experience in this science fair project has been incredible - not only for me but for everyone who has helped me," Ruah said. "I loved being part of this competition and feeling the rush of excitement and nerves throughout every stage that I passed, making me really appreciate perseverance and hard work.”

At the February 8 Regional Science Fair awards ceremony, Ruah received a trophy and two additional special awards: the ASM Materials Award and a Broadcom Award. In addition, seven more Scheck Hillel students received gold medals and five students were awarded bronze.

Regional gold medals were awarded to Michael Abbo, Andrea Berti, Sophie Gamburd, Jamie Kurzer, Jaime Mizrahi, Lee Peleg, Andres Ruah and Talya Shechter. Regional bronze medals were awarded to Daniela Assor, Ilan Brejt, Johnathan Lev-Tov, Alan Strulovic and Noah Yecutieli.

Science teacher Angela Williams commented: “I am so proud of the amazing work and accomplishments of Andres and all of our students. Human ingenuity was evident and they truly are our future. I can't wait to see the wonderful scientific discoveries that they bring to this world.”

“We are so proud of these students,” said Vanessa Donaher, Head of Scheck Hillel Community School. “Congratulations to our young scientists and their families, as well as to our science faculty, Angela Williams and Luis Comulada. These impressive science fair honors illustrate our faculty members' hard work and Scheck Hillel's commitment to creating opportunities for students to foster identity and maximize achievement.”

Scheck Hillel’s Design/STEM curriculum starts in Early Childhood Education (ECE) and progresses through Grade 12. In ECE, Design/STEM is taught in the classroom through day to day activities in Science and project-based learning opportunities. Kindergarten-Grade 5 students also use the I Lab as a dedicated space for inspiration and innovation, designed to extend classroom learning in an environment that promotes collaboration and experimentation. In the I Lab, students engage in developmentally sequenced activities focused on Design/STEM concepts with a focus on social studies, digital literacy, coding, and robotics. In Grades 6-12, the Multimedia Maker Lab is the hub for Design/STEM learning. Scheck Hillel offers a 4-year high school Design/STEM program of hands-on laboratory courses designed to mimic work environments in the real world; applications open for rising Grade 9 students every spring.
