Holocaust Survivor David Schaecter and wife Sydney Schaecter to be Honored at Temple Judea's L'Chaim To Life! Fundraising Gala

Temple Judea, one of Miami’s largest Reform congregations, is pleased to announce that world-renowned Holocaust survivor David Schaecter, and his wife Sydney Schaecter, are the synagogue’s 2019 Honorees at their premier fundraising gala to be held April 13, 2019 at 6:30pm. Entitled L’Chaim, To Life!, the Gala will celebrate the lives of these two unique individuals who continually inspire, lead by example and take personal responsibility for ensuring the well-being of others. The L’Chaim, To Life! Gala Co-Chairs are Linda & Michael Bittel and Bella & Jay Newmark.

David Schaecter, a founding member of the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, speaks globally recounting his ‘Choose Life’ story. Schaecter is the subject of the 2017 documentary, ‘A Call to Remember’, by Holocaust scholar, Michael Berenbaum. Born in a small village in Czechoslovakia, Schaecter was a young boy when the Nazis rose to power in Germany and is the only member of his family to survive the Holocaust. The film illustrates his struggle for survival in Auschwitz, his escape, and how Schaecter pieces his life back together following the war.

Sydney Schaecter’s contributions to the South Florida Jewish community have been recognized for more than 40 years dating back to her board leadership positions at the South Dade area office of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and the Alper JCC. Her more recent contributions came notably through her roles as Associate Director of Major Gifts for the Greater Miami Jewish Federation as well as the Employment & Business Development Specialist for ParnossahWorks Miami (now known as J-Works Miami).

Individual Gala tickets are $250 per person for a “L’Chaim” ticket and $180 per person for a “To Life!” ticket. Thursday Night Live: Comedian Elon Gold Headlines Scheck Hillel Community School’s 2019 Annual Event

Scheck Hillel's 2019 Annual Event

North Miami Beach, Fla.– Scheck Hillel Community School hosted its 2019 Annual Event to benefit the school’s Kulanu Scholarship Fund on Thursday, January 17. This year’s theme, Thursday Night Live, featured comedian Elon Gold, famous for his roles on TV and his recent Netflix special. Nearly 400 supporters attended the event, including community leaders.

Event committee members included Susy and Larry Abbo, Colette and Mark Feldman, Valerie and Alexander Friedman, Eliane and Lando Kravetz, Evelyn and Isaac Marcushamer, Jennifer and Daniel Naim, Shana and Jacob Russo, Tammy and Jonathan Saporta, Betina and Jack Strimber, and Viviane and Alex Wolak.

“Throughout the past 10 years, nearly 1,800 Kulanu scholarships have been awarded to Scheck Hillel families - and those scholarships were made possible only because of donors, like the ones here in the room tonight and who contribute throughout the year,” said Vanessa Donaher, Head of Scheck Hillel Community School. “At Scheck Hillel, Kulanu is at the heart of everything we do. Through Kulanu, we ensure the future of our community and the future of Jewish education.”

During the event, a video showcased the stories of two families who were empowered by Kulanu, and conveyed how this fund is crucial for the continuity of Jewish education.

Nearly 20% of Scheck Hillel students receive tuition assistance through the Kulanu Scholarship Fund, which is funded solely by donors.

Elon Gold visited the school before the event and spoke to Scheck Hillel’s high school students about life in the entertainment industry while maintaining a strong Jewish identity. It was an inspiring - and entertaining! - opportunity.

Scheck Hillel Community School's Girls STEAM Club Awarded Prestigious Grants

Girls Building STEAM Club

North Miami Beach – Scheck Hillel Community School’s Girls Building STEAM Club has been awarded two grants for the student-developed program entitled, “Designing the Future: Using Fashion to Address Ecological Needs.” This innovative program is exclusively for girls in Grades 3-10.

Conceived by the student club, this initiative will team Lower School students with Upper School mentors to investigate ecological issues specific to the South Florida environment. Teams will design and produce wearable fashion that will bring attention to and help find solutions for the problems the students have identified.

Designing the Future is partially funded by two grants. The Women’s Impact Initiative of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation will support the program’s faculty, a project exhibit and the opportunities for students to present at the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference in Philadelphia and the FETC: Future of Education Technology Conference in Orlando. The Technology, Education, Research & Redesign Alliance (TERRA, Inc.) grant will expand Scheck Hillel’s Multimedia Maker Lab beyond traditional Design/STEM areas of study with technology and equipment for fashion design, robotics, art and jewelry production.

“Designing the Future epitomizes Scheck Hillel’s commitment to empowering our students to maximize achievement, explore passions and foster identity,” said Vanessa Donaher, Scheck Hillel’s Head of School. “We are grateful to the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, TERRA and faculty advisor Nancy Penchev for bringing our students’ innovative spark of an idea to life.”

Nancy Penchev, Scheck Hillel’s I Lab Instructor and Lower School Technology Coordinator, guided the students through the program development and grant application processes and is eager for next steps. “We will research local ecological issues, interview experts, design and produce the fashion and share our process with the world through @girlsbuildingsteam and #eHillel on Instagram and Twitter,” she said.

Scheck Hillel applauds the club’s grade 7 students who led the grant application process: Ellie Esquenazi, Eva Gelb, Zohara Schrager, and Jessica Waxenghiser.

Designing the Future will launch in February 2019 and will present a spring showcase of research findings and fashion products. After the showcase, the students will auction the fashion and distribute earnings to the school's Kulanu Scholarship Fund and the Girls Building STEAM program.

Scheck Hillel’s I Lab is a dedicated space for inspiration and innovation, designed to extend Kindergarten-Grade 5 classroom learning in an environment that promotes collaboration and experimentation. In the I Lab, students engage in developmentally sequenced activities focused on Design/STEM concepts with a social studies focus. In Grades 6-12, the Multimedia Maker Lab is the hub for Design/STEM learning. Scheck Hillel offers a 4-year high school Design/STEM program of hands-on laboratory courses designed to mimic work environments in the real world. Inquisitive learners who are tenacious creative problem-solvers may apply to the program for Grade 9.
