The Refugee Crisis: The Jewish Response

We are witnessing the largest refugee crisis in human history. Our Jewish tradition and recent history demand a Jewish response. But how? The Rabbinical Association of Greater Miami, HIAS (formerly the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) and synagogues throughout Miami have joined forces to bring you an evening of education and action on The Refugee Crisis: The Jewish Response. With support from Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), the program will include specific advocacy efforts and open conversation about how to respond as a community.

The Main Event 2018

Gather with your community to celebrate Israel at The Main Event on Monday, February 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Miami Downtown. Chaired by Nadine and Steve Foldes, The Main Event is one of Federation’s largest fundraising events of the year. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen will be honored with the 2018 Friend of Israel Humanitarian Award for her tireless work in support of the State of Israel, its freedom and its citizens. Lt.-Gen. (Res.) Benny Gantz, Former Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces will give the keynote address.

Billy will offer a “sermon-in-song” using guitar, middle eastern frame drums, and his trademark homemade instrument creations.

Saturday, January 20th Tot Shabbat Sing-and-Play – 10:00am Funky Jewish music for the whole family! Billy’s creative sounds are guaranteed to inspire wonder, joy, and singing. Billy Jonas makes innovative use of found objects, using the rhythm of words, the body, and instruments to inspire young and old.

The Art of Jewish Song (Seudah Shlishit) – 3:00pm Location TBA A participatory musical experience! Using Billy’s original pieces, original settings of prayers and liturgical texts, as well as standards, we’ll dive into the heart of what makes a song or melody “Jewish.”

Sunday, January 21st Re-Percussion (for J-PLEx 4th-6th graders) – 9:30am With boxes, tin cans, and plastic containers, tape, and ingenuity, we’ll create playable musical sculptures. The sky is the limit!

Family Concert – 11:30am Engaging sing-alongs, call and response, and question/answer songs, with lots of hand motions, featuring homemade percussion instruments from found and recyclable objects.

This program is made possible by generous contributions made to the Kalish Artist-in-Residence Fund. This fund was established in memory of Hillary Kalish, daughter of Ronald & Nedra Kalish to insure that Temple Judea is able to offer regular artist-in-residence programs.
