Special Mitzvah Seder

The Miami Jewish Abilities Alliance (MJAA), a Federation program, is recruiting volunteers for a Passover Special Mitzvah Seder, an event designed specifically for Jewish adults with developmental or physical challenges organized by Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus.

The event takes place on Monday, April 10 at Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus and volunteers are needed to serve as one-on-one companions for the participants and guide them through the Seder service and dinner. Help is also needed for setup and serving. The Seder, which is partially funded by an MJAA Inclusion Grant, has been structured to accommodate adults with disabilities, including seating with no more than seven people per table. Each guest will receive a filled Seder plate, a unique Haggadah in Pictures and a song sheet. There will be singing of prayers and songs with the words projected on a screen to make it easy to follow along. Souvenir photos will be available and each participant will leave with a plush frog keepsake. To see the volunteer opportunities and to register click here. To contact the organizers for more details, you may email [email protected]. To learn more about MJAA, click here.

Jewish? Thinking about starting or growing your family?

Did you know one of every 40 Jewish men and women of Ashkenazi ancestry carries the BRCA genetic mutation, which leads to an increased lifetime risk of developing breast, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate and other cancers?

Yodeah, a local grassroots nonprofit promoting breast cancer awareness and prevention is on a mission to educate the Jewish community about the risk of carrying the BRCA gene and other hereditary cancer mutations. Learn about the BRCA positive gene mutation and its impact on family planning during a Zoom webinar presented by Yodeah on Monday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. Panelists will include two couples who learned they were BRCA-positive and took steps with respect to family planning, as well as Yodeah founder Dr. Elizabeth Etkin-Kramer and in vitro fertilization specialist Dr. Vanessa Weitzman. The volunteer organization, which is supported in part by a Federation Women’s Impact Initiative Grant, also facilitates on-site, low-cost saliva testing to identify likely carriers.
