Miami Gives Back During Third Annual Jewish Community Volunteer Day
On a day when they could have been relaxing at home with friends and family, nearly 500 members of Miami’s Jewish community spent December 24 helping others as part of the Third Annual Jewish Community Volunteer Day, sponsored by Ford Motor Company. The program was coordinated and implemented by the Jewish Volunteer Center of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, the central clearinghouse for volunteerism in Miami’s Jewish community.
Whether they were working together on an art project and cooking food with the Community Partnership for the Homeless or serving a meal at the Salvation Army, Miami’s Jewish community did a lot of tikkun olam, or repairing the world. Additional projects took place at the David & Mary Alper Jewish Community Center and the Ronald McDonald House. That was where one of the day’s most touching moments occurred, as a blind child received a gift with several components that he could “see” through touch. “Are you Santa?” he asked one of the volunteers. The volunteer responded: “How did you know?”
Amy and William Wildstein co-chaired the event.
“It’s really inspiring to see so many people from across our community come together to make a difference in so many people’s lives,” said Amy Wildstein. “The looks on everyone’s faces – both the volunteers and the recipients – were absolutely priceless. It was wonderful to watch as our volunteers worked on projects together with the kids and families they were assisting.”
