Sana Krasikov at Alper JCC Berrin Family Book Fest

Ahavat Olam

Tuesday, January 09, 2018, 7:30pm to 9:30pm

"The Patriots" is a riveting novel about idealism, betrayal, and family secrets set in the U.S. and Russia during the Cold War years. When the Great Depression hits, Florence Fein leaves college for what appears to be a plum job in Moscow—and the promise of love and independence. But once in Russia, she quickly becomes entangled in a country she can’t escape. Through the history of one family, who moves back and forth between continents over three generations, "The Patriots" is a poignant tale of the power of love, the rewards and risks of friendship, and the secrets parents and children keep from one another.

Jewish Book Series Welcomes Naomi Levy

Tuesday, January 09, 2018, 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM

A bestselling author and rabbi’s profoundly affecting exploration of the meaning and purpose of the soul, inspired by the famous correspondence between Albert Einstein and a grieving rabbi. “A human being is part of the whole, called by us ‘Universe,’ a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts, and feelings as something separate from the rest―a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness...” ―Albert Einstein When Rabbi Naomi Levy came across this poignant letter by Einstein it shook her to her core. His words perfectly captured what she has come to believe about the human condition: That we are intimately connected, and that we are blind to this truth.

Monday, January 15, 2018, 6:45 pm to 9:00 pm

The Refugee Crisis: The Jewish Response An Evening of Education and Action As Jews, the issue of refugee resettlement is particularly important. Our rabbis teach us that no fewer than 36 times the commandment of protecting the rights of the powerless and the stranger are repeated (Bava Metzia 59a). Our historical experience roots this obligation in our own stories, as we personally know the vulnerability and isolation of those without home or place. We are living through the largest refugee crisis in human history. What is the nature of this refugee crisis?

The Wartime Escape of Curious George: Margret and H.A. Rey’s Journey From France

Sunday, January 28, 2018, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

EXHIBITION OPENING DAY: Curious George and the series of books that chronicle his mischievous adventures has been a favorite of children all over the world for decades. However, few people know about the incredible journey of his creators, Margret and H.A. Rey, German Jewish refugees who were forced to flee Paris along with thousands of other refugees after the Nazi invasion of France, June 1940. The original Curious George Manuscript were among the few possessions they managed to take with them, riding bicycles south towards freedom on a five month journey that would take them to Spain, Portugal, Brazil and eventually New York. Told via a series of beautiful watercolors, the exhibition explores the Rey’s early creative collaborations, their escape and traces the story of how George himself (originally titled The Adventures of Fifi) spanned the wartime period. This exhibition is part of Holocaust Education Week, a community-wide program of the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, a Committee of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
