Justice Breyer discusses the many ways in which American judges, when interpreting American law, must take ever-greater account of foreign events, law and practices. Written with unique authority and perspective, The Court and the World reveals an emergent reality few Americans observe directly but one that affects the life of every one of us.

Kristallnacht Commemoration

Thursday, November 09, 2017, 6:00 PM to 7:30 Pm

Local residents of all ages will commemorate one of the most tragic days in modern Jewish history, as the Holocaust Memorial of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation observes the 79th anniversary of Kristallnacht, The Night of Broken Glass, on Thursday, November 9, beginning at 6 p.m. Widely considered to be a major turning point in Hitler’s campaign to annihilate the Jewish people, Kristallnacht was marked by a series of coordinated attacks in Germany and parts of Austria on November 9-10, 1938, which caused the deaths of 91 Jews and the incarceration of 30,000 in concentration camps. The streets were covered with broken glass from the shattered windows of Jewish-owned buildings, stores and synagogues that were vandalized and looted during the attacks. In the years since the end of World War II, Miami’s Jewish community has joined with others around the globe to host annual Kristallnacht commemorations that pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and ask participants to speak out against hatred, bigotry and violence in the modern world.

Souad Mekhennet at Alper JCC Berrin Family Book Fest

Temple Judea

Thursday, November 16, 2017, 7:30pm to 9:30pm

Souad Mekhennet, born and educated in Germany and now a Washington Post reporter, has had to balance the two sides of her upbringing – Muslim and Western. In her compelling and evocative memoir, this courageous journalist offers a penetrating look at the roots of Islamist radicalism. I Was Told to Come Alone is a journey into the heart of the Muslim world starting in the German neighborhoods where the 9/11 plotters were radicalized and the Iraqi neighborhoods where Sunnis and Shia turned against one another, and culminating on the Turkish/Syrian border region where ISIS is a daily presence. Mekhennet then focuses on Europe, where terror has become enmeshed in Western civilization.

Co-sponsored by the Israel, Rose, Henry and Robert Weiner Charitable Foundation, Inc. in Memory of Hermine Winer

Tuesday, November 28, 2017, 7:30pm to 9:30pm

Abraham Zapruder didn’t know, when he began filming President Kennedy’s motorcade on November 22, 1963, that twenty-six seconds of his home movie would change not only his family’s life but also American culture and history. Now his granddaughter tells the “fascinating and cautionary tale” (The Wall Street Journal) of the Zapruder film and raises some of the most important social, cultural, and moral questions of our time. Using personal family records, archival sources and interviews she traces the film’s complex journey through history, considering its impact on her family and the public realms of the media, courts, Federal government, and the arts community.
