Melton Mini-Course: One People, Two Cultures: Do the World’s Two Great Jewish Communities Really Understand One Another?

Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE)

2012-06-14, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

The Jewish world has changed dramatically over the last century. Today, the world’s largest Jewish communities live in Israel and North America – collectively accounting for more than 80 percent of the global Jewish population. Each community is comforted and strengthened by the other, but misunderstandings -- and even some degree of resentment toward one another -- exist. Join us as we reflect on our Israel experience and grapple with the differences between how we perceive ourselves as Jewish Americans and how our counterparts see themselves as Jewish Israelis. In what arenas are we wrestling (in conflict) and in which are we hugging (in harmony)? Enjoy a “Melton-style” workshop -- interactive, open-minded, source-based -- where we explore interesting and controversial subject matter through the media of text, song, video and more. There is no charge to attend. RSVP to brancman@gmjf.org or 786.866.8410.

Melton Mini-Course: I ♥ Hatikva: What Is the Jewish Hope for Israel?

Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE)

2012-07-12, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM

There is no way to understand what is going on in Israel today -- the major political parties in the Knesset, the Israeli Supreme Court, Israeli-Arab citizens, and so much more -- without a grounding in the key documents of Israel, which set out the values and ideals of the Jewish State. The right and the left, the religious and anti-religious sectors, Jews and non-Jews -- all of them refer to these documents when they argue their points of view. Together, we'll study, analyze, debate and discuss what these documents say and what their impact is -- and should be -- on the Israel of today. Warning: Controversy Ahead! There is no charge to attend. RSVP to brancman@gmjf.org or 786.866.8410.
