Alper JCC Jewish Book Festival Celebrates Creativity

Dr. Deborah Lipstadt, author of "The Eichmann Trials", spoke recently at an awards ceremony and described how Jews embrace life by writing, reading and celebrating books. “We create. We innovate.” The talented authors participating in the Alper JCC’s 31st annual Jewish Book Festival bring us the past and creatively shape the new. Their stories range from Soviet Jewry to treasures in the Cairo Geniza, and their diverse backgrounds include a pro baseball player, a musical genius, the executive producer for the hit TV series 24, and a multi-millionaire who made it rich on the internet.

Women’s Day Luncheon on Friday, November 4th features Lisa Bloom, an award-winning journalist and a legal analyst for CBS News and CNN, who has covered every major crime and justice story of our time including Casey Anthony; the Duke rape scandal; the Saddam Hussein crimes against humanity tribunal; and the Michael Jackson child molestation case. In her provocative and entertaining book, "Think", Bloom outlines the ways that we as a society, have fallen off the intellectual path, and points to how damaging this has been to us on many levels. You’ll laugh at her no nonsense manner, question yourself, occasionally squirm, but, most importantly, think!

The festival opens on Monday, October 24 with Alice Hoffman, the distinguished author of eighteen novels, who makes history feel immediate and compelling in her latest book, "The Dovekeepers". Set in Israel in 70CE, this spellbinding story is based on the true events of Masada, where nine hundred Jews held out on a mountain against the Romans, and all but two women and five children were massacred. Just some of Hoffman’s bestsellers are "The Red Garden", revealing her love of mythology; "At Risk", a family dealing with AIDS, "Here on Earth", an Oprah Book Club choice, and "Practical Magic", exploring love and desire that was made into a film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

Shawn Green is a two-time All-Star Major League Baseball player whose remarkable career spanned fourteen years. One of the best-loved players in recent decades, and “the greatest Jewish baseball player since Sandy Koufax” (Kirkus Review), he shares the lessons the game has taught him about being present and finding inner stillness--even with a ball hurtling toward him at ninety-five mph. Part sports memoir filled with personal anecdotes and ballpark wisdom, and part spiritual journey, "The Way of Baseball", is a thoughtful exploration on how to live a meaningful, well-balanced life.

Charles Fox has composed the music for over 100 motion pictures and television films, including “Goodbye Columbus,” “Nine to Five,” “Happy Days,” “Laverne & Shirley,” and the original theme for “Monday Night Football.” Hear him play one of his familiar tunes, and enjoy a peek into Hollywood when he shares highlights of his career. He has worked with some of the greatest names in entertainment, film, television and records including: Barry Manilow, Jim Croce, Roberta Flack and Lena Horne. Mr. Fox is one of the most performed composers in the world, and has won two Emmys, and received the Best Song Grammy for “Killing Me Softly with His Song.”

Howard Gordon was the executive producer for the hit TV series 24. In his debut thriller Gideon’s War, we meet Gideon Davis, a world-class negotiator and peacemaker, who has just 48 hours to bring his rogue agent brother to Washington, D.C., from Southeast Asia before a twisted global conspiracy turns deadly. This masterfully told story juxtaposes a brother who makes peace vs. a brother who makes war. Surprise raffle for fans of 24!
