‘Spiritual Path of Mussar’ to be next program in Temple Israel's Jewish spirituality series

Dr. Alan Morinis, a Rhodes Scholar, anthropologist, filmmaker, author and founder of The Mussar Institute, will discuss "The Spiritual Path of Mussar," a centuries-old Jewish practice for living a more spiritual and fulfilling life, on Sunday, February 10, at Temple Israel of Greater Miami, 137 N.E. 19 Street, Miami.

Open to the community and free of charge, the 7 p.m. talk is part of Temple Israel’s ongoing Jewish Spirituality Series, co-sponsored by FIU's Program in the Study of Spirituality. Co-sponsoring the February 10th program are The Mussar Institute and the Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education.

A student of spiritual traditions, Morinis is an active interpreter of the teachings and practices of Mussar, and regularly gives lectures and workshops on the topic. Born and raised in a culturally Jewish but non-observant home, he studied anthropology on a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University, which published his first book, Pilgrimage in the Hindu Tradition. After taking a deep journey into Hindu and Buddhist thought and practice, for the past decade the Jewish spiritual discipline of Mussar has been his passion, as reflected in his more recent books, Climbing Jacob’s Ladder and Everyday Holiness: The Jewish Spiritual Path of Mussar.

This is the third program in Temple Israel’s Jewish Spirituality Series, which began in December 2012. Previous talks were given by Rabbi Arthur Green, Rector of Hebrew College Rabbinical School and Professor Emeritus at Brandeis University who was named one of "America's Top 50 Rabbis in 2012" by Newsweek magazine, and Dr. Nathan Katz, a four-time Fulbright scholar who is a Florida International University Research Professor in the School of International and Public Affairs, Academic Director of the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, and Director of the Program in the Study of Spirituality.

For more information on the February 10th program and Jewish Spirituality Series, visit Temple Israel website's Jewish Spirituality Series page at: templeisrael.net/spirituality/ or contact the temple at 305.573.5900 or info@templeisrael.net.

"The Grand Celebration" at Temple Beth Tov-Ahavat Shalom

Temple Beth Tov-Ahavat Shalom Presents its "Grand Celebration"

Temple Beth Tov-Ahavat Shalom will be presenting "The Grand Celebration" on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 4pm, to honor four of its leaders: Rabbi Manuel Armon, Cantor Irving "Babe" Resnick, and Mr & Mrs. Milton Miller. A sumptious dinner is planned, with entertainment, silent auction and raffle. In advance, tickets are $36 per adult; and, at the door, $40; the cost per child is $10. Please RSVP: Rhoda (305-661-1421). The Conservative synagogue is located at 6438 SW 8th Street, West Miami 33144.

To highlight an honoree: Cantor Irving 'Babe' Resnick. was born and raised in the Greater New Jersey area. Early on, he became an active Zionist. The family business brought him to reside in Stroudsburg, PA. for ten years and Plainfield, NJ for twelve years. For the past 15 years, Babe has proudly served as the Cantor of Temple Beth Tov-Ahavat Shalom of West Miami. For 20 years before this, he served at various synagogues in the area such as The Shul of Bal Harbor, Beth David Congregation and Young Israel of Kendall. Before moving to Miami in 1977, Babe served for 10 years as the Baal Sheni at Temple Beth El in Plainfield, NJ. His studies have included two years with Cantor Larry Loed of Temple Beth El of Plainfield NJ, and two years with Cantor William Lipson of Beth David Congregation in Miami. For the last two years, Babe has been studying opera and cantorial music with Charles Schneider of Highland Park, NJ. Part of his musical experience has included participation in numerous secular and liturgical choirs. For most of his adult life, Babe was actively involved in the family wholesale distribution business while music, particularly chazzanut, was his love and avocation. Babe has three great children's Kyle, Noah and Eva, from his late wife Carol, of blessed memory, two grandsons and recently a new daughter-in-law. Babe is now blessed to be with his dear Adrienne, his life partner.
