A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION OF
THE GREATER MIAMI JEWISH FEDERATION

Welcome to the June 2020 edition of The Foundation e-newsletter. This month, we are writing to share some new and inspiring stories from our donors and their lasting Jewish legacies. We hope you enjoy reading these and we encourage you to reach out to us with your story of what motivates you and how you want to make a difference in our community.

We have also included information about deepening family connections during this challenging time. We hope you will find this to be valuable. We are pleased to provide you and your family with meaningful opportunities to connect with one another around Jewish community, charitable giving and values.

Thank you for your continued trust and partnership with us. We were here in the past, we are here in the present and we will be here in the future as we look forward to a stronger tomorrow — today!

INVESTMENT UPDATE

As historic as the COVID-19 crisis has been, so has the response from fiscal and monetary authorities. Trillions of dollars have been infused into the economy and capital markets to mitigate the impact of this pandemic. This action and reaction led to a strong rebound in capital markets in April and May. US and international stocks rose 19% and 11% respectively since March 31. High yield bonds, REITs and commodities also rebounded over the last two months. In aggregate, most asset classes have now recovered over half their losses of March.

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation blended portfolio also rebounded during April and May by an estimated 6.59%, resulting in a -6.74% calendar year-to-date return through May 31. During the first three weeks of June ending June 19, markets continued to recover, although volatility remains at historically high levels.

The events that occurred over the first half of the year reflect the complexities of financial markets and the challenges in making accurate short-term tactical allocations. Now, more than ever, the Investment Committee remains confident that the best approach is to maintain a balanced portfolio with a long-term investment perspective. Looking ahead, we continue to actively monitor potential portfolio risks and opportunities as we recognize the important role our endowment plays in support of our Jewish community.

A special thanks to Steve Wagner, Investment Committee Chair, and the members of our Investment Committee for their active guidance navigating this crisis and accessibility as we have been in frequent communication monitoring and managing the precious assets of our community.

We also want to acknowledge and appreciate our donors and agencies for their continued trust and confidence working in partnership with The Foundation to manage the community’s charitable assets.
