More than 1,000 members of Miami’s Jewish community received free kosher food last week at the second Kosher Food Distribution Drive-Thru organized by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and its Jewish Volunteer Center. |
Working with Jewish Community Services of South Florida, our primary human service agency, Feeding South Florida, the Sol Taplin Charitable Foundation and Temple Emanu-El, 18 volunteers helped load packages of fresh food including kosher meat, rolls, locally grown fruits and vegetables and non-perishables into the trunks of 300 vehicles — some arriving as early as 5 a.m. The next food drive will take place on August 20 at the Dave & Mary Alper JCC. This summer, Federation joined other organizations under the umbrella of the Jewish Service Alliance to create Serve the Moment. |
The four-week “summer of service” program engaged 18-29-year-olds with the intent of initiating 100,000 acts of meaningful, community hands-on volunteering projects. The corps members focused their work on helping those suffering from the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis, the resulting economic downturn and the movement to end systemic racism. Federation partner Repair the World, the lead organization managing the effort, coordinated the activities of the seven Miami corps members who worked with a variety of community-based nonprofits. The cohort also met weekly for reflection and conversation about social justice, Jewish values and teachings. Read more. | | | |

Base Miami, a program aimed at engaging young professionals and families in deep exploration of their Jewish identity in a home-based setting, is now a proud Federation program. |
Base Miami is centered around the home of Rabbi Adam and Jessie Gindea in Brickell. Founded on the values of hospitality, learning and service, Base Miami is focused on pluralistic educational events and programs that help create stronger connections to community and Judaism. After three successful years of community building and programming under the auspices of University of Miami Hillel with the support of the Mason-Glazier Fund for Jewish Identity, Base Miami is expanding its communal reach with the support of Federation. Federation overseas partner The Jewish Agency for Israel is helping the most vulnerable older adults in Israel cope with the pandemic. |
Residents of Amigour, a housing community supported by The Jewish Agency, are receiving food, other necessities and emotional support. For Etya Papugayev, the help has been a lifeline. Born in Lithuania in 1931, Etya was her family’s sole survivor of the Holocaust. Like so many, the 89-year-old Survivor is at high risk of contracting the coronavirus. The Jewish Agency has stepped in to ensure these elderly Israelis are cared for and comforted during the pandemic. Through The Jewish Agency's Emergency Loan Fund for Non-Profits, Federation has also been able to assist critical Israeli organizations during these historic times.
