Rocket Attacks in Israel: A Statement from the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation

Between Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas launched over 600 rockets and mortars at Israel from Gaza. Four Israeli civilians were killed, including an American, in the barrages, over 200 hospitalized and scores more traumatized. Using Gazans as human shields, the terrorists deliberately aimed their rocket attacks at Israeli civilian centers and struck homes, a factory, a kindergarten and a hospital. After two days of targeted Israeli retaliation against this barrage of rockets, a cease fire was reached early Monday morning.

No sovereign nation should ever be expected to allow a reign of terror to be imposed upon its people. It is simply and unequivocally intolerable. Israel has the indisputable right and responsibility to defend its citizenry.

We offer our prayers for the full recovery of those injured and extend our deep condolences to the families of those who were killed. These men and women will be in our hearts as we approach Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s day of Remembrance for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism, on Wednesday, May 7.

We call upon all men and women of good will to condemn the acts of terror reigned by Hamas upon Israel and its own people. We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Israel, hoping for the day when quiet and security for the residents of the South become a lasting reality.
