Miami-Yerucham Partnership
For the past 13 years, the Miami Jewish community and the city of Yerucham have had a special partnership under The Jewish Agency’s Partnership 2Gether platform. Located in the Negev desert with warm, wonderful people, a magnificent landscape and boasting the second largest lake in Israel, Yerucham is a 13-square-mile city founded in 1951 as a transit camp for new immigrants. Today, it is home to a diverse population of approximately 12,000 residents representing a microcosm of Israel’s many cultural and ethnic communities.
A source of deep pride for Yerucham is the dynamic mayor, Tal Ohana. She was elected the Mayor of Yerucham in October 2018 and is the youngest woman mayor in Israel. Tal was born and raised in Yerucham and is the fourth generation of immigrants from Morocco. She has made headlines these past few months because of her exemplary leadership in managing the coronavirus in Yerucham.
The mission of the Miami-Yerucham Partnership is to leverage social, human and financial capital to inspire community engagement and development. By investing in relationships, education, culture and community-building initiatives, the partnership fosters a deeper commitment to Israel and the Jewish people, while enriching the quality of life in our community. The Greater Miami Jewish Federation helped provide seed money for the Culinary Queens of Yerucham program, which produced this cookbook Yerucham, Bamidbar, D’varim. (Shown)
The Chairs of the Partnership are Mytyl Simancas-Bister in Miami and Ofir Tsimmering in Yerucham.
