Kick Off for Florida Jewish History Month at Jewish Museum of Florida

Join the Jewish Museum of Florida for the kick-off of the 10th annual celebration of Florida Jewish History Month on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. This year's Florida Jewish History Month coincides with the 500 year anniversary of the arrival of Ponce de Leon in Florida. Jewish Museum of Florida's Founding Executive Director Marcia Jo Zerivitz will lead this conversation on the topic of “Could Jews as Conversos/Crypto Jews/New Christians have lived in St. Augustine in the 16th century?” Speakers include Dr. Abe Lavender, editor of the Journal of Spanish, Portuguese and Italian Crypto Jews and Professor of Sociology and Sephardic Studies at FIU, who will discuss the history of Conversos in the U.S.; and members of the St. Augustine Jewish Historical Society, Rabbi Merrill Shapiro and Carl Lindenfeld, and Professor Tudor Parfitt, School of International and Public Affairs and President Navon Professor of Sephardi and Mizrahi Studies, FIU. Co-sponsored by the Spain-Florida Foundation 500 yrs.
