Fighting Anti-Semitism with Bari Weiss

The Braman Miller Center: the University of Miami Hillel is thrilled to invite you to an exclusive event featuring the award-winning speaker, author, and a New York Times columnist, Bari Weiss.

Ms. Weiss is a writer and editor for the op-ed section of The New York Times. Vanity Fair recently called her the paper’s “star opinion writer.”

Through her columns and speeches, Bari has changed the way we think about important issues, including #MeToo, freedom of speech, and our common culture. Bari is a Pittsburgh native and her first book, How To Fight Anti-Semitism, was published by Crown in September 2019.

Before joining The Times, Bari was an opinion editor and an associate book review editor at The Wall Street Journal. For two years, Bari was a senior editor at Tablet, the online magazine of Jewish news, politics, and culture, where she edited the site's political and news coverage.

Bari is a regular commentator on television and radio, most especially on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher.

In July 2018, Bari was awarded the Bastiat Journalism Prize for what the judges called “her brilliant, incisive journalism that defends the cornerstone of individual liberty and civil society: freedom of speech.”

Come Hear About the Elie Wiesel You Didn't Know

Elie Wiesel was a towering presence on the world stage—a Nobel laureate, activist, adviser to world leaders, and the author of more than forty books. But when asked, Wiesel always said, “I am a teacher first.”

In fact, he taught at Boston University for nearly four decades, and with this book, Ariel Burger—devoted protégé, apprentice, and friend—takes us into the sacred space of Wiesel’s classroom. There, Wiesel challenged his students to explore moral complexity and to resist the dangerous lure of absolutes. In bringing together never-before-recounted moments between Wiesel and his students, Witness serves as a moral education in and of itself—a primer on educating against indifference, on the urgency of memory and individual responsibility, and on the role of literature, music, and art in making the world a more compassionate place. Come here from the author Rabbi Ariel Burger, who recounts his lifelong relationship with Elie Wiesel as his disciple, student, and teaching assistant. His book, Witness, won a 2019 National Jewish Book Award.

Join us on February 12, 7:30 PM, at the Michael Ann Russell JCC. Light refreshments will be served.

Sponsored in partnership with MARJCC Meet the Author Series and Mishkan Miami: The Jewish Connection for Spiritual Support of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.

Tu B'Shvat Tree Planting Ceremony

Chabad of Palmetto Bay, in partnership with the Village of Palmetto Bay, will host a Tu B'Shvat Tree Planting Celebration event on Sunday, February 9th starting at 11:00 am at Ludovoci Park,17641 Old Cutler Rd, Palmetto Bay, Florida 33157.

The 15th of Shevat on the Jewish calendar, celebrated this year on Monday, February 10, 2020, is the day that marks the beginning of a “new year” for trees. Commonly known as Tu Bishvat, this day marks the season in which the earliest blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle.

We mark the 15th of Shevat by eating fruit, particularly from the kinds that are singled out by the Torah in its praise of the bounty of the Holy Land: grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates. On this day we remember that “man is a tree of the field”, and reflect on the lessons we can derive from our botanical analogue.

This is a FREE family event and everyone is welcome to attend. There will be a tree planting ceremony followed by a workshop on the meaning of food and sample preparations of food.

For more information call Chabad of Palmetto Bay at 786 282 0413.
