“CHARLIE” IS A YOUNG ADULT WITH AUTISM who has been supplementing his Social Security lifeline with a job as a bellman at a Miami Beach hotel.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the hotel to lay off staff, Charlie lost his job and he discovered he no longer could afford to pay his rent and feed himself.
Since the South Florida market currently offers few work opportunities for employees with developmental disabilities and Charlie has no family to provide financial assistance, his government checks are his only source of income and his independence is threatened.
