CJL Surpasses $22 Million in Promised Gifts for Jewish Community

Since its launch in 2013, Create a Jewish Legacy (CJL) has received widespread acclaim by members of Miami’s Jewish community for its innovative and collaborative approach to fundraising. As a program of The Foundation of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, CJL brings together representatives from 16 local agencies, day schools and synagogues, and provides thorough training for volunteer leaders and professionals on how to solicit planned gifts that will benefit vital institutions.

Through these partner organizations’ shared commitment to secure a more vibrant Jewish future for all, CJL has already achieved great success. To date, more than 240 community members have formally declared their intention to leave a planned gift, totaling an estimated $22 million.

Barbara Black Goldfarb is Chair of CJL. The 16 partner organizations are: Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus/Hochberg Preparatory School, Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center on The Jay Morton-Levinthal Campus, Galbut Family Miami Beach Jewish Community Center on the Simkins Family Campus, Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Hebrew Academy (RASG), Jewish Community Services of Florida, Kesher L.D., Lehrman Community Day School, Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center on the Sanford L. Ziff Campus, Scheck Hillel Community School, Talmudic University, Temple Beth Am and Temple Beth Am Day School, Temple Beth Sholom, Temple Israel, University of Florida Hillel and University of Miami Hillel.

Additional organizations will be invited to participate in CJL’s next training sessions, which begin in the fall.

Another innovation of CJL is its Certified Legacy Advisor (CLA) program, which shares information with attorneys, accountants and other professional advisors about opportunities for charitable giving in Miami’s Jewish community. Participants learn how to help their clients meet their personal planning and philanthropic goals while supporting vital institutions and services now and in the future.

A CJL donor can make a commitment, either through a current or future gift in a will, estate plan or insurance policy to create a legacy gift to benefit one or more organizations.

A gift of any size can be customized and structured to fit a CJL donor's philanthropic aspirations, lifestyle, family and financial situation. He or she can provide support for a particular institution, such as a synagogue or social-service agency.

Alternately, the donor can designate support for an area of interest, such as caring for the elderly, educating children or advancing Jewish cultural programs. The ability to customize each legacy gift to the individual donor's wishes has proved to be the program's most appealing feature.
