Strengthening the Jewish Future…
In Their Own Words

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation remains strong thanks to members of our Heritage Society, Forever Pacesetters and Forever Lions.

Each year, The Foundation makes a sizable allocation to the Annual Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Campaign and the overall Federation infrastructure thanks to the legacy of those who came before us. This past year, that distribution totaled $4.4 million from Campaign Endowment Funds and the Jewish Community Trust Fund. These funds help provide Federation with the resources to care for those in need, meet unexpected challenges and plan for the future, now and forever.

When Terri and Paul Bachow got married, they moved to Miami to be part of a community. They found that community when they became involved in the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. It began with a trip to Israel; Terri and Paul participated in the Federation Mega Mission in 2013 along with a pre-mission to Poland. This life-changing experience inspired Terri to become a Lion of Judah and Paul to create a documentary “A Journey into the Holocaust” using footage he captured from eyewitnesses to the horrors of the Holocaust. The documentary is now used as a teaching tool for Holocaust education in 48 states.

When they returned to Miami, Terri’s involvement deepened. She joined the Women’s Amutot Committee and later was invited to join the Federation Board of Directors, two experiences she has found to be incredibly fulfilling.

Terri and Paul then saw a whole other side of the Federation when they needed help finding the right continuum of care facility for Paul’s mother. “It was the most unbelievable thing,” Terri recounts. “It was the first time I needed help and luckily I had people at the Federation I could turn to.”

Last year, Terri participated in the International Lion of Judah Conference where she learned about the Lion of Judah Endowment program and became interested in taking that next step in her philanthropic journey. She had just started the process of updating her will and planned to include the Federation as a beneficiary.

In May, that process was completed. “The pandemic is a reminder to me that the critical work of the Federation never stops. It motivated me to formalize my legacy commitment,” Terri said. “The Federation made Miami feel like a home for us. Thankfully, I’m in a position to help and I feel strongly that it is my responsibility as a Jew to be there for my community both now, as a Lion of Judah, and when I’m no longer here as a Forever Lion.”

Terri Bachow established a Lion of Judah Endowment fund in her name through a gift in her will, making her a Forever Lion. This commitment will perpetuate her Lion of Judah level gift to the Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Annual Campaign beyond her lifetime.

Charitable Donations Through a Gift in Your Will

The most common ways donors make a legacy commitment is through a gift in a will, retirement plan or a gift of life insurance. You can name the Greater Miami Jewish Federation as a beneficiary in your will or revocable living trust.  You may also add a codicil to your will and/or make an amendment to an existing revocable trust.

The amount can be specified in dollars or percentage of your estate.

Benefits:

  • Effective planning tool to reduce estate taxes, if applicable
  • Does not affect your current income or assets during your lifetime
  • Easy to create and modify with the assistance of an attorney if your circumstances change
