Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria Create Humanitarian Crisis

With tens of thousands of people dead and more than 1 million displaced by the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, humanitarian organizations, including many Federation partners, are working diligently to help individuals and families affected by this heartbreaking situation. In addition to the fear of returning to damaged buildings, survivors are faced with extreme cold weather, lack of food and shelter and many other concerns. As Federation’s partners distribute tents, heaters, thermal clothing and blankets, first aid kits and hot meals, they have been collaborating closely with each other, with NGOs, with local community leaders and with volunteer groups. One strong leader in this cooperative effort is Federation’s long-time partner, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), which in the aftermath of the earthquakes, convened the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief to bring together Jewish organizations operating in the field. JDC also has launched a WhatsApp group to ensure communication and coordination between 63 Jewish and Israeli organizations working in Turkey.
