JCRC Statement on Same-Sex Marriage Court Rulings
January 6, 2015
In response to yesterday's court rulings on legalizing same-sex marriage in the State of Florida, the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation released the following statement:
"Yesterday's historic court rulings on legalizing same-sex marriage in Florida are an important step forward in the pursuit of equality in our state. Florida is the nation’s 36th state, plus the District of Columbia, where same-sex couples can marry or have their legal marriages recognized. The U.S. government has recognized same-sex marriage since June 26, 2013, when the Supreme Court declared a portion of the federal Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.
Our JCRC welcomes these decisions based on our deep and enduring commitment to oppose any efforts to deny essential liberties to any person regardless of race, creed, color or sexual orientation. We are heartened to witness the democratic process in our country that addresses issues of equality.
We applaud the efforts of those leaders in our community who worked tirelessly to ensure that affording equal dignity under the law to same-sex couples and their families became a reality.”
