Strengthening Jewish Life in Kazakhstan

Federation overseas partner, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), is helping Jewish women in Karaganda, Kazakhstan in the former Soviet Union find connection and camaraderie. At a JDC-supported Jewish community center, a group of women meet together for fun and engaging activities through the Naomi Women’s Club. They watch Jewish movies, listen to lectures and participate in Jewish holiday cooking workshops. The women also volunteer with Like Leykah, a project that distributes food and hygiene necessities to single and low-income elderly members of the community, disabled people and children from vulnerable families ahead of Jewish holidays. The club helps strengthen Jewish life in Karaganda, which is about 1,000 strong.
