Greater Miami Jewish Federation Mourns the Loss of Former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation mourns the loss of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Mr. Sharon passed away on the Jewish Sabbath on January 11, 2014. He spent his entire career in defense of the State of Israel, since its establishment in 1948. His dedication to Israel and the Jewish people worldwide was reflected in his lifetime commitment to both military and public service roles. Elected as Prime Minister in 2001, he served in that capacity until 2006 when he fell into a coma from which he never recovered.

Many in Miami’s Jewish community who participated in Greater Miami Jewish Federation Missions to Israel over the years will recall how Mr. Sharon welcomed us, recognizing the unique and deep partnership that exists between Jews in Israel and Jews in the Diaspora. He always began his remarks to our groups by saying, “I am a Jew first, and then an Israeli.” Furthermore, he often spoke about the unique and vital relationship between the North American Jewish community and Israel by referring to us as “Israel's most important strategic asset.”

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors and Staff of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, we extend to the Sharon family and the people of Israel our heartfelt condolences. May they be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. May the memory of Ariel Sharon forever be as a blessing.
