Greater Miami Jewish Federation, JCRC Mourn Death of Rep. Alcee Hastings

Statement Miami Heat

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation and its Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) mourn the death of Congressman Alcee Hastings. A staunch civil-rights advocate whose activism began in the 1950s with lunch counter sit-ins and other demonstrations, he was a stalwart supporter of Israel and longtime friend to the South Florida Jewish community.

State Sen. Shevrin Jones said it best: “It’s a huge loss because he was a spokesperson for so many, not just the Black community, but the Jewish community. He was able to resonate with so many people because he told the un-doctored truth.” We are grateful for Congressman Hastings’ friendship over decades, especially as a long-standing and influential leader of the Congressional Black Caucus where he was a consistent voice advancing the importance of a close and cooperative relationship between the Black and Jewish communities.

May Congressman Hastings’ legacy live on, in the halls of Congress and throughout our communities.
