Greater Miami Jewish Federation Statement on FlyDubai Attempted Hijacking
The Greater Miami Jewish Federation is relieved that the passengers and the crew of the FlyDubai flight bound for Israel are safely home, following an attempt by a terrorist copilot to hijack and crash a plane carrying 174 passengers, mostly Israelis, including four American dual citizens.
We are deeply grateful to all of the crew members and passengers who subdued the terrorist and brought the plane to safety — in particular Captain Smit Machchhar, the pilot, who, despite being severely injured after he was stabbed, managed to unlock and open the cockpit door and allow others to take quick and decisive action. The courage of so many prevented what could have been an unspeakable tragedy. We are equally grateful to the Saudi Arabian authorities, who, after an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, provided medical treatment as needed and shepherded the passengers home to Israel.
While the full details of what occurred are still emerging, what is clear is that in a moment of crisis, people came together to protect one another. That instinct — to stand up, to help, to refuse to let terror define the outcome — reflects the very best of the human spirit, and stands in stark contrast to the motivations behind this horrific attack.
We wish Captain Machchhar and all the injured a refuah shlema (speedy recovery). We will continue to partner with Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) and Secure Community Network (SCN) to monitor the situation and will share additional information as appropriate.
