Meet Steven Pressman Author of 50 Children: One Ordinary American Couple's Extraordinary Rescue Mission into the Heart of Nazi Germany

Beth Torah Adath Yeshurun

Monday, May 02, 2016, 7 PM to 9:30 PM

In this highly readable, carefully researched book, Steven Pressman presents a sobering account of the tremendous obstacles faced by Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus of Philadelphia, who set out to bring fifty Jewish children from Vienna to the United States in the late 1930s. The Krauses were undeterred despite stiff immigration quotas, innumerable bureaucratic obstacles, anti-Semitic State Department officials, and opposition by Jewish organizations as well as ordinary Americans. Pressman’s deeply affecting account is a tribute to a couple whose heroic efforts were a beacon of light during a time of unremitting darkness for the Jewish people.

The Last of The Just

Monday, May 02, 2016, 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM

The Last of The Just by Andre Schwarz-Bart In partnership with the National Jewish Theater Foundation (NJTF), Holocaust Theater International Initiative (HTTI) and GableStage we present the 2nd annual Holocaust Remembrance Reading. The Last of The Just is a novel by Andre Schwarz-Bart originally published in French in 1959. It was Schwarz-Bart's first book and won the Prix de Goncourt, France's highest literary prize. The author was the son of a Polish Jewish Family murdered by the Nazis. He based the story on traditional Jewish legend. The story follows the "Just Men" of the Levy family over eight centuries. Each Just Man is a Lamed Vav, one of thirty six righteous souls whose existence in each generation justifies the purpose of humankind to God. Each one bears the world's pains beginning with the execution of an ancestor in 12th-century York, England and culminating in the story of a schoolboy, Ernie, the last of the righteous, murdered in Auschwitz. The book has been described as an enduring classic. The Event: Last year saw the launch of the NJTF/HTTI Holocaust Theater Catalog (www.htc.miami.edu), now part of the Miller Center. With nearly 600 play entries written since 1933 to the present day, it is the most extensive, easily accessible catalog of Holocaust related theatrical titles ever created. We-The Miller Center and GableStage - now join NJTF/HTTI's national initiative of holding simultaneous staged readings of Holocaust-related material, on the eve of Yom HaShoah, in numerous locations across the country.

“Remember When…”, An Artistic Tale on the Wandering Sephardi

Temple Moses - Sephardic Congregation of Florida

Wednesday, May 18, 2016, 7pm to 10.30pm

A Compelling Art Exhibit Takes Place at Temple Moses Miami Beach-FL, USA May 18th-19th 2016 Website: www.immersiveartmiami.com/registration Temple Moses in partnership with Immersive Art Miami is proud to present “Remember When…”, An Artistic Tale on the Wandering Sephardi. This art show highlights the Judeo-Spanish journey through five centuries of Diaspora. “Remember When…” will feature the latest art collections of Master Artist and published author Jônatas Chimen. The exhibit will be composed of his latest multi-sensory installation titled In Thy Tent I Dwell, recently featured at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum in Miami, alongside The Diaspora Creature, a collection showcased at Miami Art Week in 2015, The Journey Series, which awarded Jônatas Chimen the 2015 Artist of the Year title by the Anti-Defamation League, and the unveiling of his never-before-seen series White Washing the Proverbial Wall. The art installation, In Thy Tent I Dwell, reveals a 500-year history of migration and forced religious conversions of the artist’s family. Foregoing a linear narrative and the certainty often ascribed to photographs and official documents, artist Jônatas Chimen has instead produced a multi-sensory experience of “nostalgia.” He partially accomplishes this through photo transfers of family photographs, birth certificates, and immigration documents onto the outside of a tent-like structure. Critics immediately recognize the installation’s close parallel to a very current issue; the psychological effects of the modern international immigrant crisis of the Middle-east, Europe, and the United States. The Journey Series is a visual narrative that reveals an introspective chronicle of Chimen's first-hand experience of coming into the light of freedom after his family endured centuries of secretly sustaining a crypto-Judaic heritage. The tale depicted by the artist through this historic collection is fascinating, as it can be universally experienced and appreciated as a personal account about protecting and embracing Identity. The Journey Series was exhibited at the Jewish Museum of Florida in 2016. The Diaspora Creature collection can be considered the raw version of The Journey Series. In this compilation, Jônatas Chimen creates a memoir-style chronicle of the crypto-Jewish legacy of compulsive migration, persecution, and adaptation. The artist combines his own family's archives, memories, legends, and genealogical records into one piece, with no clear timeline or delineation between fact, imagination, fears, dreams, angst, and the desire for redemption. The event will include a live performance by Jônatas Chimen, and a cocktail reception. A large part of the art sale proceeds (all tax-deductible) will benefit the Temple Moses community.
