Exposing the Darkness: Photography in Conflict Zones

US Holocaust Memorial Museum

2016-02-10, 7:00 pm to 8:30 PM

Photographs have the power to transport us back in time and across the world, enriching our knowledge and understanding of other countries, cultures, and individuals at a given moment. War photographers put themselves in harm's way to capture the unique experiences of armed conflict on the human level. With a mandate to alert the national conscience to genocide and crimes against humanity, the Museum relies on the documentation taken by these very photojournalists to capture the stories of destruction and devastation, and to provide essential evidence of war crimes. Please join us for a special panel discussion with Cameron Hudson, who will share their experiences with photographs of mass atrocities, and will discuss the role and impact of photography in documenting conflicts and crisis around the world.

Predators and Prey: A Roman Mosaic from Lod, Israel

2016-02-10

In 1996, workmen widening the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv road in Lod (formerly Lydda), Israel, made a startling discovery: signs of a Roman mosaic pavement were found about three feet below the modern ground surface. A rescue excavation was conducted immediately by the Israel Antiquities Authority, revealing a mosaic floor that measures approximately 50 feet long by 27 feet wide. This large and extraordinarily detailed mosaic floor has only recently been carefully removed from its site and conserved. Found in a large villa believed to belong to a wealthy Roman, the excellently preserved mosaic floor dates to about AD 300. Two rectangular end panels flank a large square medallion. The medallion and one of the end panels contain depictions of delightful animals and exotic beasts. The remaining panel portrays a fabulous marine scene filled with a profusion of fish and Roman merchant ships. Previously exhibited at the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Field Museum, Chicago; Musée du Louvre, Paris; and, most recently, Cini Foundation in Venice, the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, FIU, will be the final venue for this remarkable mosaic, before it returns to Israel, where it will become the focus of an archaeological center in Lod. The Lod Mosaic is on loan from the Israel Antiquities Authority and the Shelby White and Leon Levy Lod Mosaic Center. This exhibition has been made possible by the generosity of Patricia & Phillip Frost.

All Shabbat potluck dinners are kosher style unless otherwise noted. These potlucks are included as a part of Jewish Disability Awareness & Inclusion Month. Here in South Florida in 2016 it’s hard to believe, but sadly true that many Jews who live with disabilities and those who love them, still don’t have access to the many opportunities to engage in Jewish life. As a community we need to stand together during Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month by creating awareness as we celebrate people in our community of all abilities. People with disabilities have many gifts and talents to share, as well as the need for community, support, and comfort provided by Jewish organizations like The Tribe. We are committed to ensuring that ALL Jews, without regard to ability, have access to Jewish life—to work, live, love, play, learn and worship as they choose, where they choose, and to contribute to this wonderful place we call our Jewish community. Thank you for taking this to heart. #JDAIM16

2016-02-21, 1:00pm to 3:00PM

The Association for Jewish Special Education a 39-year-old local organization, dedicated to providing Jewish holiday celebrations for Jewish adults with developmental disabilities and their friends. The AJSE is supported by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation. To celebrate JDAIM (Jewish Disabilities and Inclusion Month) - on Feb. 21, 2016, Sunday, the AJSE will have an Open House tentatively at Temple Beth Tov Ahavat Shalom, 6438 SW 8th St. West Miami, 33155, from 1:00 pm to 3:00pm. At this event, we will display the activities that have been ongoing for the past 39-years. This display includes the following: (1) a myriad of historical photo albums, reflecting the array of holiday celebrations, Bar Mitzvah celebrations, etc. (2) Copies of the Lech Lecha Booklet, which is used for the self-same Shabbat morning Service. It was designed 22 years ago, and has been updated and used ever since so that special needs individuals can participate in the Service, as an example of inclusion. (3)Copies of the Haggadah Booklet, originally designed 37 years ago and subsequently edited through the years. This is another example of inclusion so that special needs individuals might celebrate Passover. (4) Copies of the B’nai Mitzvah Booklet, originally designed in 1979, updated, and used to prepare special needs individuals for their respective Bar/Bat Mitzvah, as events of inclusion. Also this Open House will highlight special needs individuals who participate in the AJSE administration. They will make short presentations. Another feature of this Open House is the presentation by Benee Mills. Her autobiography, “I want to hold your hand: the will to survive,” is a poignant story about the challenge of inclusion. We hope to generate volunteers to continue the multi-faceted AJSE mission, as illustrated by the above presentations. Light refreshments will be served. Also, there will be a raffle drawing, the prize being “A Half-Day Freedom Sailboat Outing for Two Hours” by Shake-a-Leg Miami (total value $175).
