Jewish Volunteer Center Seeking Volunteers for a Day of Civic Pride in Honor of MLK Day of Service

Volunteer for a day of community service and civic pride honoring the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as the Jewish Volunteer Service (JVC) of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation participates in the 2014 MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 20.

JVC volunteers will partner with volunteers of other South Florida organizations, agencies and houses of worship in a community-building project organized by City Year Miami. More than 1,000 volunteers are expected to assemble to honor the spirit of the civil rights movement and the mission of Dr. King by sharing responsibility for a community service project.

This year, participants will donate their time and energies to transform and uplift Homestead Middle School by painting murals, planting gardens, landscaping and building benches at the school. Homestead Middle School is located at 650 Northwest Second Avenue in the City of Homestead.

To volunteer for the 2014 MLK Day of Service through the Jewish Volunteer Center please call 786.866.8680 or email Laura Guren Rodriguez at [email protected], or Carmen Flescher at [email protected]. Registration on the day of the event will open at 8:30 a.m. and volunteers will continue their beautification activities until 3:30 p.m. Kosher snacks will be available. Community-service hours will be offered.

Now in its sixth year, MLK Day of Service was conceived to observe the Martin Luther King Day holiday as a “day on, not a day off,” celebrating the achievements of the American civil rights movement, and commemorating the life and work of the late Dr. King on his birthday. It brings together volunteers in positive demonstrations of civic unity and spirit.

As the central clearinghouse for volunteerism in Miami’s Jewish community, Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center offers a wide variety of opportunities for hands-on involvement by local businesses, individuals and families. To find out about available opportunities, contact the Jewish Volunteer Center by emailing Laura Guren Rodriguez at [email protected] or call 786.866.8680.
