Cruise Line Helps Beautify
The Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation received a wonderful gift recently, when volunteers associated with Royal Caribbean Cruises lent a helping hand by painting and landscaping the Miami Beach landmark.
It was all part of the company’s annual G.I.V.E. Day, a community service event that brings together more than 1,000 Royal Caribbean employees, their families, friends, vendors and business partners to assist nonprofit organizations and improve the quality of life in their local communities. G.I.V.E. stands for “Get Involved Volunteer Everywhere.”
More than 40 employees of Royal Caribbean volunteered their time to help renovate the outside of the Memorial. They landscaped the area surrounding the educational center of the Memorial as well as painted the Memorial’s lamp posts.
Following up on G.I.V.E. Day, the volunteers returned to the Memorial another day and added beautiful lilies to the pond surrounding “The Sculpture of Love and Anguish,” the giant outstretched arm with painted bronze vignettes attached. The lilies, now blooming in shades of pink and white, represent the lives that continue in memory of those who perished.
The Memorial serves as a place of remembrance for those who lost their loved ones in the Holocaust, and a place for meditation and a place full of valuable lessons. Currently, a meditative garden is being planted to serve as an area for students to not only reflect but to record their thoughts and emotions in personal journals. Each year more than 35,000 students and 65,000 others visit the Holocaust Memorial and are touched by its significance.
