News From the Greater Miami Jewish Federation

Roughly 50,000 Argentine Jews recently gathered in the streets of Buenos Aires for Rosh Hashanah Urbano (RHU), the largest Jewish cultural event in South America.

Last year, more than 150 Jewish job-seekers found employment after receiving job counseling and placement assistance from JWorks Miami, a community employment program of Federation and Jewish Community Services of South Florida.

Thanks to community support of the Annual Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Campaign, more than 2,500 participants in Federation’s High Holiday Welcome Program were able to experience the uplifting spirituality of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur 5777.

Do you know a Bar or Bat Mitzvah student looking for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to volunteer and learn with Holocaust survivors? Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center and the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach are now accepting B’nai Mitzvah students for the Young Lion of Judah Program.

Due to the arrival of Hurricane Matthew, the Community Memorial Service for Israeli President Shimon Peres, of blessed memory, has been rescheduled for Thursday, October 13, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, 20400 Northeast 30th Avenue, Aventura.

Because of your support, Holocaust survivors know they are never alone. Through the Annual Federation/UJA Campaign, Federation’s overseas partner, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), in partnership with the Claims Conference, these frail and elderly Jews receive holistic care and critical services in cities across the globe.

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation has established an Emergency Relief Fund to assist those affected by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti and other communities. One hundred percent of this Jewish response to Hurricane Matthew will provide critically needed aid to those in Haiti and other areas.

Miami’s Jewish community recently witnessed firsthand one of the many successes of our people-to-people partnership with Yerucham when the Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education (CAJE), a Federation subsidiary agency, hosted a group from the Yerucham Science Center.

More than 30 percent of Jewish households in Miami with people over age 75 require in-home healthcare, help with senior transportation, meal delivery or other social services.
