From Setback to Strength: Miami Diller Fellows Build Connection and Leadership in Chicago

What was originally intended to be a transformative summer journey to Israel became something entirely different, but still very meaningful, for CAJE’s Diller Teen Fellows when they traveled to Chicago instead. Due to factors including the ongoing war in Gaza and the Iranian missile attacks, Diller’s International Summer Seminar in Israel was canceled. While disappointed, Miami’s 10th and 11th grade Fellows demonstrated the very qualities they have been cultivating in the program — adaptability, leadership and resilience — and embraced a new opportunity for growth, connection and community during a powerful four-day seminar. Together with the Chicago cohort, the Miami teens toured the Windy City, explored coping strategies and enjoyed a lively pizza-making session. Through group reflection and conversations with Israeli and American representatives, the teens wrestled with many issues, including the worldwide uncertainty that faces the Jewish community and how to remain connected to Israel, even from afar.
