Statement of Condolence on the Murder of Journalist Steven Sotloff

On behalf of the Board of Directors, Officers and Staff of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of Steven Sotloff, the second American brutally murdered by ISIS, the Islamic State. Steven was a journalist who followed his passion to the Middle East to report stories about the ongoing struggles in that region for news outlets such as Time, The Christian Science Monitor and other publications.  He was 31 years old, raised in Miami and a proud member of our Jewish community. He was a son, a brother and a grandson who will be dearly missed. During this unspeakably difficult time, we have been in contact with Steven’s family to offer our community’s support and prayers of strength, and most recently, to express our sympathies.

This heinous and revolting behavior is a particularly chilling example of the threat that Islamic militants in the global jihadist movement poses worldwide, the same threat faced by Israel on several fronts from associated terrorist groups in the region. We know that all people of goodwill join with us in condemning ISIS for this horrific act and call on the international community to bring Steven’s murderers to justice.

Our hearts and prayers are with the Sotloff family. May Steven's memory forever be a blessing.
