Supporting People With Disabilities and Their Families

People with disabilities and their caretakers can find valuable resources online through Federation’s Miami Jewish Abilities Alliance (MJAA), including tools that help them better advocate for themselves. Because appropriate treatment begins with initial assessments, MJAA’s website provides information and guidance on not only what to expect from psychological and educational testing but also how to navigate these processes. This includes a list of key questions to ask the attending medical practitioner to ensure a better understanding of the assessment and its implications. From the psychologist’s credentials, the purpose of testing and what it measures, to cost and insurance, follow-up support and individualized education programs (IEP) and treatment plans, these helpful prompts serve to demystify the evaluation process, instilling a greater sense of control and more effective results for those undergoing it. Federation's Disability Specialist is available to guide you through the process. Click here to access the MJAA Evaluations 101 self-advocacy questions.
