Alper JCC Book Fest Ambassador Norman Eisen

Tuesday, October 16, 2018, 7:30pm to 9:30pm

The 38th Alper JCC Berrin Family Jewish Book Festival features Ambassador Norman Eisen and his book "The Last Palace." When the ambassador moved into his residence in Prague, he was returning to the land his mother had fled after the Holocaust. In his new home he was startled to discover swastikas hidden beneath the furniture, remnants of the residence’s forgotten history. From that discovery unspooled the captivating tale of four of the remarkable people who had called this palace home – a Jewish financial baron; a cultured German general; the first postwar U.S. ambassador; and Ambassador Shirley Temple Black. Eisen weaves in the story of his own mother during the war, to represent people who were without power and privilege.

The Weight of Ink is an electrifying and powerful work of historical fiction about two women separated by centuries, and the choices and sacrifices they must make in order to reconcile the life of the heart and mind. Set in London in both the 1660s and also in the early twenty-first century, the tale weaves the stories of an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi and an ailing professor with a love of Jewish history. The book is the winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book Award.

Kristallnacht - 80th Anniversary

Sunday, November 11, 2018, 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM

Local residents of all ages will commemorate one of the most tragic days in modern Jewish history, as the Holocaust Memorial of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation observes the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, The Night of Broken Glass, on Sunday, November 11, beginning at 6 p.m. Widely considered to be a major turning point in Hitler’s campaign to annihilate the Jewish people, Kristallnacht was marked by a series of coordinated attacks in Germany and parts of Austria on November 9-10, 1938, which caused the deaths of 91 Jews and the incarceration of 30,000 in concentration camps. The streets were covered with broken glass from the shattered windows of Jewish-owned buildings, stores and synagogues that were vandalized and looted during the attacks. In the years since the end of World War II, Miami’s Jewish community has joined with others around the globe to host annual Kristallnacht commemorations that pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and ask participants to speak out against hatred, bigotry and violence in the modern world.

Thursday, December 06, 2018, 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Kosher Food and Wine Miami brings the best of Kosher Food and Wine to Miami each year. Taste sumptuous samples and make a difference! This is an evening dedicated to the industry’s finest wines and our city’s most celebrated kosher caterers and restaurants. We are pleased to present wines from all over the world that are both long-time classics, cult favorites and some new wines that are getting ready to be released, as well as access to the people responsible for helping to make the wines. And what is wine without the food? You will have a chance to sample culinary options from some of the finest kosher restaurants and caterers South Florida has to offer showcasing elegantly presented signature dishes. This one-of-its-kind event will not only promote the kosher trade industry and Israel’s ever evolving techno-agricultural production, but it will help us continue our 96-year long labor of love bettering the lives of thousands of children and women in the State of Israel through WIZO’s over 800 educational and social projects.
