LGBT Inclusion: Tools for the Front-Line Jewish Educators Workshop

Greater Miami Jewish Federation and Keshet (the national LGBT Jewish nonprofit)

2015-06-02, 10:00am to 11:30am

As Professionals working with teens in today's world it is important for us to address the question of how our educational settings include the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender members of our community. Our youth are coming out at younger ages, and LGBT adults are increasingly looking for inclusive and welcoming places for their families. This interactive workshop will help educators and youth professionals take initial steps in exploring LGBT inclusion from a Jewish perspective. We will start by allowing educators to bring their own voices into the conversation, sharing their hopes, questions, and concerns about LGBT inclusion. We will then establish a shared language for discussing inclusion by examining core LGBT terms and concepts, including the concept of heteronormativity & societal expectations around gender and how that can impact students and families. Educators will leave the workshop with concrete, Jewish values based, age-appropriate activities and lessons on how to create educational spaces inclusive of all identities and family structures. We hope that you will be able to join us! Confirm your Attendance: https://www.wizevents.com/register/register_add.php?sessid=5719&id=3533 CAJE is a subsidiary agency of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation

Ru'ach Pride Seder

2015-06-24, 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Ru’ach, Temple Israel of Greater Miami’s LGBT havurah, will hold its 15th annual Pride Seder on Wednesday, June 24. Ru'ach celebrates Florida being the 36th state to achieve marriage equality. To commemorate this milestone, we will pay tribute to those whose unions are now legally recognized in the Sunshine State. Guest speakers will be Miami attorney Richard C. Milstein who concentrates his practice on guardianship, trust, probate matters, and family law and also provides life and estate planning advice to alternative families and same sex couples; and Temple Israel's Rabbi Tom Heyn, who was among the spiritual leaders that conducted a multifaith renewal of vows ceremony for same-sex couples Jan. 6 at Miami Beach Botanical Gardens. Honored guests will be: Tony Lima, executive director of SAVE, a South Florida organization dedicated to protecting the LGBT population against discrimination; and Stratton Pollitizer, deputy director of Equality Florida, a civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida’s LGBT community. As it has from it inception, the Pride Seder celebrates the freedoms and remember the challenges of the LGBT community. So too, it is an occasion filled with stories. Modeled on the Passover Seder, when we recall the Jewish people's liberation from bondage, the Pride Seder shares the stories and hardships of LGBT Jewish life. We celebrate the many freedoms we have obtained, and explore those freedoms not yet within our grasp. As in years past, the evening will be filled with moving stories, uplifting song and wonderful food. Hosts for the evening are Avi Flashenburg, attorney Elizabeth Schwartz, Temple Israel's director of music Dr. Alan Mason, and Michael Meltzer of Michael's Catering, which is catering the event. The evening is open to all in the community, and begins with holy schmoozing at 5:30 p.m., with the Seder and dinner getting under way at 6 p.m. in the Wolfson Auditorium on the Temple Israel campus, 137 NE 19th St., in downtown Miami. Free self-parking is available in the temple lot. Cost $36 per person. For prepaid registration, click here. For more information, contact Temple Israel at info@templeisrael.net or 305.573.5900.
