What Are 40 Days & 40 Nights?

"Our Sages were brilliant. They understood what modern science is just learning: that it takes at least a month to change habits, to create a new routine, to create new patterns. Our rabbis gave us the entire month of Elul to do the hard work of changing. They gave us tools, such as tefilah, tzedakah, and teshuvah so that we can stand before God on the Day of Judgment. This year, we may not all be together for the High Holy Days, but the entire Jewish community of Miami-Dade is coming together to offer 40 days and nights of opportunity to grow our souls."
Rabbi Greengrass
Make an opening for repentance no bigger than the point of a needle, and it will widen into openings through which wagons and carriages can pass.
Shir HaShirim Rabbah 5:3
"There are forty days between the start of Elul and erev Yom Kippur. That's forty days to deepen our connection with ourselves (teshuva); forty days to deepen our connection with God (tefillah); and forty days to deepen our connection with our fellow human beings (tzedakah). Let's get to it."
