Renewal, Influence and Legacy
Sunday, May 17 | 1 PM
Jewish Heritage Alliance and Greater Miami Jewish Federation invite you on a profound journey into the world of the Western Sephardim — Jews of Iberian origin, many former conversos — who rebuilt Jewish life after fleeing the Inquisitions of Spain and Portugal. This compelling multi-part webinar series uncovers how Sephardic resilience shaped commerce, religious freedom and cultural life across the Atlantic World.
In Part III of this powerful webinar series, Messianism and Sephardic Hope in the New World, explore how Western Sephardic communities grappled with faith, uncertainty, and renewal across the Atlantic world. Led by Professor Willem Klooster, this session examines the spiritual dimensions of Sephardic life — from the visionary efforts of Menasseh ben Israel to the widespread anticipation surrounding Shabtai Zvi — and how messianic belief shaped identity, community, and historical experience.

iMordecai Film Screening at the MBJCC
Posted by Maxwell Schrader-Grace on 04/28/2026 @ 03:23 PM

A very special screening on Monday, May 11 at 7:30 PM, as part of our Jewish American Heritage Month Programming of the heart-warming, Miami based film – iMordacai. An uplifting comedy and a love letter to the city of Miami, iMordecai urges us all to live the one life we have to the fullest.
Writer, Producer and Director Marvin Samel will make a special guest appearance. There will be a talkback after the movie.
Based on a true story, iMordecai stars Academy Award-nominated and two-time Emmy-winning actor Judd Hirsch (star of the Emmy-winning sitcom Taxi, Ordinary People, Independence Day) as Mordecai Samels and Academy Award-nominated actress Carol Kane (Hester Street) as his wife, Fela, both survivors from Poland, who are now living in Miami. Their son, Marvin (Academy Award-nominated actor Sean Astin, The Lord of the Rings), is an ambitious cigar maker trying to support his own family while still being there for his aging parents. But when Mordecai's ancient flip phone breaks, he starts to take lessons from Nina (newcomer Azia Dinea Hale), a yong employee of Ultratech. She tutors Mordecai on his new iPhone, opening him up to all kinds of novel experiences and adventures, which makes him feel like a kid again.
This film screening is presented in partnership with The Miami Jewish Film Festival.
