Jewish Agency Helps Rescue 200 From Ethiopia

Following ongoing clashes between a local militia and government forces in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, Federation overseas partner The Jewish Agency for Israel and the Israeli government last week rescued more than 200 Israeli citizens and members of the local Ethiopian community. The group, which included Jewish Agency volunteers and 55 Ethiopians eligible for aliyah (immigration to Israel), was flown to Addis Ababa, where some will remain while others continue on to Israel. In addition to joining this rescue effort and providing support for newly arrived olim (immigrants), The Jewish Agency opened a call center to answer questions from Ethiopian-Israelis concerned about friends and family still in their home country. “We initiated this rescue operation as part of our shared commitment and strong dedication to our people,” said Jewish Agency Chairman Major General (Res.) Doron Almog. “We won’t abandon any Jew who needs our help on the ground.”
