A Winter Escape for Ukrainians Impacted by the War

The winter edition of Szarvas International Jewish Youth Camp recently came to a close, leaving hundreds of campers with big smiles and memories that will last a lifetime. Federation’s longtime overseas partner, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, created Szarvas, located in rural Hungary, to address the needs of a growing population of Jews seeking to learn about their roots after the fall of Communism. In addition to its incredibly popular summer programming, the facility has been used as a respite camp for Ukrainian Jews who are experiencing the hardships of the war. As they continue to face more distress, Szarvas enables Jewish families to take fun-filled trips, learn new things and enjoy a warm and relaxing Jewish environment. “I am charged up with optimism and positivity for a long time!” said Anait, a participant in the winter camp. “I met with old friends and found new friends, too.” Szarvas receives an annual allocation from the Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Campaign.
