Transforming the Island Refuge: Jewish Photographers in Britain, 1860-2016

FIU Global Jewish Studies

Monday, April 24, 2017, 7 PM to 8:30PM

Britain is widely respected for taking photography seriously. It is highly unlikely photography in the country would have evolved as it did without the roles played by Jews, and especially Jewish emigres. While many were seeking better opportunities, there also were those who escaped to Britain in the wake of repression and especially the Nazi menace. In part British visual culture was the creation of refugees such as Stefan Lorant and Helmut Gernsheim, and most recently, (American) Annie Leibovitz, whose fascinating relationship with the queen reveals a rich history of the Jewish engagement with photography in Britain. Michael Berkowitz, a native of Rochester, NY, is a Professor of modern Jewish history at University College London and editor of Jewish Historical Studies: Transactions of the Jewish Historical Society of England (UCL Press).

Israeli Film Night at the MBJCC: Kidon

Miami Jewish Film Festival

Monday, May 08, 2017, 7:30 pm

"Kidon" begins in the morning of the 18th of February 2010 in Tel-Aviv when the whole world wakes up discovering, on the front page of all the newspapers, pictures of the Mossad agents caught while killing Mahmoud al Mabhouh in Dubai a month earlier. It was the first time that simple security cameras of a hotel caught secret agents red-handed, what's more Israeli agents. But without doubt, the most surprised of all were the Mossad leaders who were the only ones to know for sure that the 3 men and the woman, whose faces were in all the newsrooms of the world, had nothing to do with them. From then on, a race against time is undertaken hoping to understand why everything is aiming at them.
