A Unique Federation-Funded Program is Helping Keep Survivors of Domestic Violence Safe

A Federation Women’s Amutot Initiative grantee is addressing the increase in domestic violence in Israel since October 7 with a special canine protection program. Dedicated to combating violence against women, the Michal Sela Forum responded to the 65 percent rise in incidents since the war began by providing guard dogs to survivors of domestic violence. On average, participating women reported a 70 percent reduction of threats by their ex-partners due to their dog’s presence. Additionally, the women’s elevated sense of personal safety, freedom and control has resulted in a significant increase in social interactions and activities for their children. Batya, whose husband had threatened to kill her after serving time for assaulting her, completed a three-month Forum training program before she and her three daughters welcomed guard dog Bamba into their lives. “I don’t know where my ex-husband is,” she shared, “but it’s easier to sleep at night.” Click here to learn more about our Women’s Amutot Initiative.
