Volunteer Your Time and Talent as a Docent at the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach

The Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, a Committee of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, is seeking dedicated volunteers who share a passion for Jewish education and who understand the importance of teaching the lessons of the Holocaust, to participate in an orientation program and become docents at the Memorial.

Eight docent training sessions will be conducted from February 4 to March 18, 2015 at the Holocaust Memorial, during which staff, visiting educators and scholars will teach the volunteers how to lead group tours for visitors of all ages. In addition, docents will learn methods of communication and engagement with visitors to the Memorial.

To qualify to become a docent, you must be an enthusiastic individual who is comfortable speaking before visiting groups, including middle-school and high-school students. You also must be able to commit to volunteering at the Holocaust Memorial during a regularly scheduled time frame.

“The Holocaust Memorial hosts thousands of visitors each year, and our docents are responsible for communicating the significance of the Memorial and its message about the Shoah,” said Andrew C. Hall, Chair of the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach. “Our docents are essential to achieving our educational mission and operating needs. Their voices reflect the horrors of that time and are irreplaceable.”

Major funding for the docent program has been provided by the Florida Department of Education.

Applications for docent positions are available by contacting Daniel Reed, Holocaust Memorial Education Director, at 305.538.1663 or [email protected]. Completed applications must be submitted by Sunday, January 25.
