Hillel at FIU Expands to Biscayne Bay Campus

“We want to make FIU a place where Jewish students are proud to be Jewish, where they feel connected and where they feel safe and included,” says Jon Warech, Executive Director of Hillel at Florida International University (FIU), one of the seven Federation-supported Florida Hillels. To that end, Hillel at FIU will be expanding its reach with a new student lounge in the Wolfe University Center at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC). Thanks in part to its North Miami Beach location and the classes it offers, BBC draws many Jewish students. “The entire city of Miami is our campus," says Warech. "We have buildings everywhere. So to have another touchpoint of Jewish life — another place for students to connect to each other and the university as a whole through our programming — helps us cement our place in student life.” At FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus, Hillel has also extended the lease on its space for an additional five years. Other Federation-funded Hillels include Central Florida Hillel, Hillel at FSU, Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach, Hillels of the Florida Suncoast, UF Hillel and UM Hillel.
