Israeli College Students Support Olim Impacted by Ukrainian War

Federation is helping elderly olim (immigrants to Israel) impacted by the war in Ukraine find support in their new home through Choosing Tomorrow, an innovative program that pairs them with local college students. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, approximately 5,000 elderly immigrants made aliyah, many of them completely alone as they began the long road to resettlement. Israeli college students who join the program combine leadership training with social activism and community awareness as they function as “bridges” for newcomers acclimating to a different environment. Many can empathize as first- or second-generation olim who have experienced the challenges of immigration. In addition to alleviating feelings of loneliness and easing the new olim's transition into Israeli daily life, student participants promote social awareness, encouraging civic responsibility and become equipped with practical tools for active citizenship during and after their studies.
