The Attorneys’ Division of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation will honor the achievements of three legal luminaries – Judge Jerald Bagley, the late Judge Amy Karan, and attorney and community leader Robert H. Traurig – at its 31st Annual Judicial Reception on Tuesday, March 31, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, Miami.

Judge Bagley will receive the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his outstanding career both before and on the bench. He moved to Miami in 1984 to work as a Miami-Dade Assistant State Attorney. In the decade that followed, he served in the Juvenile and Felony divisions of the State Attorney’s Office before becoming Assistant Chief Attorney. In 1995, he was appointed to the Eleventh Judicial Circuit and subsequently presided over all matters in the Civil and Criminal divisions from death penalty convictions to constitutional issues. He continues to influence the practice of law as an adjunct faculty instructor with the University of Miami School of Law’s Litigation Skills Program. Judge Bagley also has served the South Florida community in various civic capacities, including as an Advisory Board member of the Jackson Memorial Hospital Rape Treatment Center and as a member of the Boot Camp Task Force of the Dade Partners for Safe Neighborhoods.

Judge Karan will be honored posthumously with the 2015 Community Service Award in recognition of her leadership in the area of domestic violence law. Her daughter, Amber Kornreich, a graduating Florida International University Law School student, will accept the award on her behalf. While serving as Administrative Judge of the Domestic Violence Court in Miami from 1997 to 2010, Judge Karan pioneered mixed model approaches that inspired other courts around the nation. Judge Karan chaired the Miami-Dade County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council, the Florida Bar Family Law Section Domestic Violence Sub-Committee, and the Advisory Panel of the Miami-Dade Fatality Review Team. She also was a Director of the U.S. Justice Department’s Office on Violence Against Women. After retiring from the bench due to health issues, she passed away in 2013 from a rare form of Parkinson’s Disease.

Robert “Bob” Traurig, a founding partner of Greenberg Traurig, will receive the 2015 Honorable Theodore “Ted” Klein Award, which pays tribute to an attorney or judge who has made a profound impact on individuals in the legal community. In the course of more than 50 years as one of South Florida’s most influential and recognized real estate and land use attorneys, he has played an important role in Greenberg Traurig’s transformation from a South Florida firm with a local practice to an international law firm with approximately 1,800 attorneys worldwide. He also has shaped the careers of hundreds of young attorneys. A civic and cultural activist, Mr. Traurig is past Chair of both the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and the Miami Coalition of Christians and Jews. In addition to being a past President of the Greater Miami Opera Association, he has served on the University of Miami’s Citizen’s Review Board, and the boards of directors of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, The Center for Jewish Life at Beth David, New World Symphony, Inner City Children’s Dance Company, and Partners for Progress.

Greenberg Traurig Co-President Hilarie Bass and Kosyak Tropin Throckmorton President Harley Tropin are serving as Co-Chairs of the 2015 Judicial Reception. Robert Zarco chairs the Attorneys’ Division of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
