The Attorneys’ Division of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation will honor the achievements of two respected members of the South Florida legal community – Legal Services of Greater Miami Executive Director Marcia K. Cypen, Esq. and the Honorable Stanley Marcus, United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit – at its 33rd Annual Judicial Reception on Thursday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Jungle Island, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail, Miami.

Ms. Cypen will receive the Attorneys’ Division’s 2017 Community Service Award, honoring her long-term devotion to promoting access to civil justice. After joining Legal Services of Greater Miami as a law clerk in June 1974 and graduating from the University of Miami School of Law, she was hired there as a staff attorney in 1976. Ms. Cypen’s dedication was rewarded with a series of promotions, which included her elevation to Executive Director in 1983, a position she has held for nearly 34 years. Under her leadership, Legal Services of Greater Miami has become a recognized leader in providing access to civil justice; it is also highly regarded in both the state and nation as a model Legal Services program. Her passion for pro-bono assistance and her many collaborative relationships have led to the development of innovative programs that meet the unique legal needs of isolated and vulnerable members of the community and enhance access to the civil justice system.

Judge Marcus will receive the 2017 Honorable Theodore “Ted” Klein Lifetime Achievement Award, which pays tribute to an attorney or judge who has made a profound impact on individuals in the legal community. A graduate of Harvard Law School, he clerked for U.S. District Judge John Bartels in the Eastern District of New York, and soon thereafter became an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn. After Marcus led the Justice Department’s Organized Crime Strike Force in Detroit, President Ronald Reagan appointed him as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida in 1982. Three years later, President Reagan appointed him as a Federal District Judge in Miami. In 1997, President Bill Clinton named Judge Marcus to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, where he continues to serve.

Judge Marcus has chaired the Judicial Conference of the U.S. Committee on Federal-State Jurisdiction and its Ad Hoc Committee on Gender-Based Violence. He also served as a Board of Directors member of the Federal Judicial Center. In addition to his extensive writings, Judge Marcus has taught trial advocacy and First Amendment jurisprudence to countless law students at Brooklyn Law School and St. Thomas University School of Law.

Robert C. Gilbert and Michael D. Joblove are Co-Chairs of the 33rd Annual Judicial Reception. The couvert for this popular networking event is $85 per person and includes a cocktail reception and sumptuous buffet following the awards presentation program. There will be no solicitation of funds. Dietary laws will be observed.
