Local Grant Recipient Widens the Tent for Miami’s Orthodox LGBTQ Jews

Eshel, a recipient of a Federation Jewish Incubator Grant, was recently featured in the Miami Herald for their advocacy and inclusion work on behalf of the LGBTQ+ Orthodox community. Last month, the nonprofit hosted a Shabbaton (a weekend retreat over Shabbat) for LGBTQ+ individuals to come together to combat isolation, build community and provide essential resources for mental health and support as they face unique challenges within their religious spaces. “The needs in Florida are very acute,” said Eshel Executive Director and Co-Founder Miryam Kabakov. “A lot of parents are worried about their children and LGBTQ+ people are worried about discrimination.” The retreat also featured programming for family members, rabbis and educators, focusing on allyship and advocacy.
