Reaching Out to Isolated Ukrainian Seniors

As the crisis in Ukraine continues, the Federation-supported Hesed Menachem Call Center reaches out regularly to isolated or homebound seniors. Ninety-four-year-old Ruziya is one of 300 elderly Ukrainian Jews identified as lacking care, connection and Jewish community simply because she can’t attend in-person activities. Forty-five dedicated volunteers — themselves recipients of social services — call these vulnerable seniors once or more each week. They provide companionship, assist with everyday challenges and act as touchpoints on their health and emotional well-being. Many of these relationships have lasted for years, providing participants with vital psychological support, relief and hope. “These conversations help me stay in touch with the world,” said a grateful Ruziya.
