Kristallnacht - 80th Anniversary

Sunday, November 11, 2018, 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM

Local residents of all ages will commemorate one of the most tragic days in modern Jewish history, as the Holocaust Memorial of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation observes the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, The Night of Broken Glass, on Sunday, November 11, beginning at 6 p.m. Widely considered to be a major turning point in Hitler’s campaign to annihilate the Jewish people, Kristallnacht was marked by a series of coordinated attacks in Germany and parts of Austria on November 9-10, 1938, which caused the deaths of 91 Jews and the incarceration of 30,000 in concentration camps. The streets were covered with broken glass from the shattered windows of Jewish-owned buildings, stores and synagogues that were vandalized and looted during the attacks. In the years since the end of World War II, Miami’s Jewish community has joined with others around the globe to host annual Kristallnacht commemorations that pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and ask participants to speak out against hatred, bigotry and violence in the modern world.

Hereditary Cancer NCJW Panel

Tuesday, November 13, 2018, 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Studies have shown that 1 in 40 Ashkenazi Jews (men and women) have a BRCA mutation - and most are unaware! Compare that to the general population incidence, where BRCA mutations occur in 1/300-1/800 people. Woman who carry a BRCA mutation have up to an 88% lifetime risk of breast cancer and up to a 45% risk of ovarian cancer. Men also have just as much of a chance of having this mutation, and run a higher risk of prostate and male breast cancers. If we can identify who carries these genetic mutations before they develop cancer, we can prevent cancer. Join us for a panel about hereditary cancer, with an opportunity to get tested right there! Free & open for all!

XXXVII Annual Maccabi Games

Thursday, November 15, 2018, 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM

The Michael-Ann Russell JCC Maccabi Games was first organized in 1982, when a small group of Latin Jewish immigrants decided to continue the tradition of these games that were so popular in their native Latin American countries. From its inception, athletes would register for the Games by country of origin, allowing them to maintain cultural ties to the countries from which they emigrated. Thirty seven years ago, there were 350 children and adults, divided into four teams. Today, the Games have become a reflection of South Florida’s large and diverse Latin Jewish population, but also embrace participation by the entire total Jewish community. The MAR-JCC Hebraica Maccabi Games is an Olympic-style sporting competition. This week-long athletic event features over 700 competitive games in 13 different sports including Basketball, Swimming, Track and Field, Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball, Flag-Football, and more. The Games attract about 2000 registered athletes, and up to 3,000 spectators daily.

Young Lion of Judah - Teen Program Meeting 2

Holocaust Memorial, Greater Miami Jewish Federation

Sunday, December 16, 2018, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM

A unique B’nai Mitzvah project for students becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. In addition to choosing individual volunteer opportunities, the Jewish Volunteer Center is partnering with the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, a committee of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation to pair students with Holocaust survivors who never had the chance to become B’nai Mitzvah. Students will spend time with a Holocaust survivor while working toward completing 10 hours of community service. Projects include learning about the Holocaust, touring the Holocaust Memorial with survivors, and beautifying and planting at the Memorial. Students are asked to honor their survivor partner during their Bar or Bat Mitzvah service and make a gift of $180 to the Annual Greater Miami Jewish Federation/UJA Campaign. They will receive a certificate of completion and their Young Lion of Judah jewelry gift – a silver bracelet for girls and a silver talit clip for boys. For an application or for more ways to become a Young Lion of Judah, please contact Jewish Volunteer Center Director Lori Tabachnikoff at 786.866.8380 or
