Taglit Birthright Summer 2014 - Day 6

I joined Taglit as a soldier, to the Miami group. I spent a year in Miami as a Shinshin, and this time, Miami came to me.
The best part of the trip was the night in Yerucham, my city, and the sister city of Miami. Before we got to Yerucham, most of the people in the group thought that Yerucham was like a city in the middle ages, with no computers, TV or Wifi. -WRONG!
We arrived to Midreshet B'Yachad, had an activity with the Israeli soldiers of the group. When the evening came, we went to "Ayalim Village"- the students village in Yerucham. We watched a short movie about this project and met a few students from the village.
Later that night we had a wonderful dinner made by one of the students who leads the Ayalim project in Yerucham, Nati Shlomi. The dinner we had is called "Poyke." The guys said that it was the best meal of the trip so far! Some of them couldn't wait and immediately asked for the recipe. We had a great night with the students, around the bonfire, sitting, eating and talking.
For me, this activity was the best way of expressing and representing Yerucham- the food, the warm people and the feeling of one big family! It really felt like home, like I was sitting around the bonfire with my best friends! I think it was a special moment, not just for me, but for the whole group. They realized that it's a special place, not a city from the middle ages, but a wonderful quiet city, with warm and nice people. I was so proud living in this place.
The next morning we went volunteering at a senior house in Yerucham. Each person painted a small picture, which at the end , with all the other pictures, became one big beautiful picture, that hanged on one of the walls in the senior house. That picture represents the two communities that became one big community. The people in the group attached so hard to the seniors, and couldn't leave them.
The visit in Yerucham was a closure for me, it represented the end of my Shlichut. After I got to know Miami- the people, the places and the culture; Miami got to know me- my place, my people, my culture. Mission accomplished!
